Povestea din The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continuă aventurile lui Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) pe parcursul călătoriei alături de vrăjitorul Gandalf (Ian McKellen) şi cei 13 pitici, conduşi de Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), în misiunea lor de a pune din nou stăpânire pe Regatul Pierdut, Erebor. Bilbo şi ai săi companioni trebuie să înfrunte multe pericole, să parcurgă teritorii ostile şi să ţină piept, în final, înfricoşătorului şi vicleanului dragon Smaug, interpretat, prin intermediul motion-capture, de Benedict Cumberbatch.
